Girton welcomes community to student art extravaganza

23 August 2023

Girton Grammar School’s Art Show is back for another year, with the community invited to explore a trail of student artworks sprawled throughout its historic MacKenzie Street campus from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 9 September.

Previously a Junior School event, this year Girton is thrilled to also include works from its Senior School students – enabling attendees to see a full progression of art created by its youngest pupils right through to those pursuing art subjects as part of their VCE.

In another exciting first, the event will showcase films and other audiovisual pieces by the School’s VCE Media students in the almost 150-year-old Girton House, with its windows blacked out for the occasion.

Girton’s Head of Visual Art, Mrs Nic James – who has now been running the event for 26 years – said there will be hundreds of artworks on display for the community to see.

“Paintings, collage, film, sculpture, ceramics, installations – there is something for all art lovers, all created by our talented students,” Mrs James said.

“This year’s theme of ‘Around the World’ has provided an incredible source of inspiration to our students, with the event timed to coincide with the Girton’s celebration of International Day.”

There will be plenty of entertainment on the day, with musical performances by the Girton Big Band and VCE Music students, and the opportunity for guests to create their own masterpiece at a guided art activity.

Attendees will also have a chance to take some art home with them, with a raffle providing the opportunity to win works donated by artist Sarah Gabriel, printmaker Kevin Foley and Nic James herself, as well as homewares from stores Alex Muir, Pan After and Murphy & Daughters. Tickets can be purchased now via this link:

In addition to providing a fun day out, Mrs James said that events such as the Art Show provide an important opportunity for students to see their creations framed, displayed and enjoyed by the community.

“I am so proud to teach our students – and to see the reactions of them, their families and the community during this event is incredibly moving and rewarding,” she said.

Prospective students and parents visiting Girton Grammar as part of the Tour Morning on Thursday 7 September will be treated to a special tour encompassing the Art Show.

The Girton Grammar School Art Show will be held from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 9 September, with entry at 105 MacKenzie Street via gold coin donation. School Tour bookings can be made via the Girton Grammar website.
