Girton Community Action Group leads the collection of blankets for Triple M Blanket Drive

12th May 2023

The Girton Community Action Group (GCAG) has taken the lead in collecting blankets from the Girton Community for the Triple M Blanket Drive. The drive, organised by Triple M Bendigo, aims to “Blanket the QEO” (Queen Elizabeth Oval) and donate the collected blankets to local charities supporting the homeless population of Central Victoria.

Homelessness is an issue that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. Statistics show that one in six people experiencing homelessness are over the age of 55, and for every young person sleeping on the streets, it is estimated that there are six others who are also homeless. Recognising the gravity of this situation, the Girton Community Action Group has stepped up to make a difference.

Under the leadership of the GCAG, Girton students have enthusiastically contributed new and good-condition second-hand blankets.

In an interview with Triple M Bendigo, Girton Vice Captain, Ronell Masiboy, said, “When we heard about this initiative we had to get on board. We know how lucky we are in our school and our community to have a house and necessities such as warmth, but we know there are so many people in our community who don’t.”

Girton Principal, Dr Emma O’Rielly said, “We are proud to see our students take an active role in shaping their educational experience and positively contributing to the world beyond our learning community.”

“The Girton Community Action Group’s involvement in the Triple M Blanket Drive demonstrates their commitment to addressing social issues and helping those facing homelessness.”

Triple M Bendigo has been instrumental in raising awareness about homelessness and driving community engagement. The Blanket Drive is part of their ongoing efforts to tackle this issue and make a difference in the lives of those affected.

On Friday 19th May, during the morning broadcast, Triple M Bendigo will gather all the donated blankets and spread them over the QEO in Bendigo, covering as much of the area as possible. Afterward, the blankets will be distributed among local charities that provide crucial support to the homeless population in Central Victoria.

The deadline for dropping off blankets and contributing to this meaningful cause is Monday 15th May. Visit the Triple M website for drop-off locations.

By joining forces with Triple M and the wider community, the Girton Community Action Group is taking steps to alleviate the hardships faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and fostering a more compassionate society.
