And All That Jazz

26th September 2018

Amy Bachmann (10 Millward) may be relatively new to Girton, but that has not stopped her throwing herself into the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Jazz Band and Big Band. She is looking forward to performing for the first time at the Twilight Jazz event on 12th October.

Amy started music as a classical piano and flautist, and over the years developed an interest in Jazz.

“Originally I joined Jazz ensembles at school and played parts on flute, and now I have started playing the Tenor Saxophone.

“I enjoy Jazz and Big Band style of music because it is completely different, and is more open for individual interpretation. I also love having the freedom to improvise and play in relaxed jamming style,” Amy said.

Amy said that she has many favourite musicians based on their unique tone and technique.

“My favourite musician is Chong Lim, the piano player for John Farnham. Chong is one of my favourites because of the time that he puts into young up and coming musicians.

“He is happy to play with students in lunchtimes, tells stories and share experiences from his time as a musician and give up his time to invest it into young music students.

“I am not sure if music is something that I want to pursue at University but it is a possibility. If I don’t do music at University I still hope to play with a small local ensemble,” she said.

Amy enjoys all of the Girton ensembles in which she plays, with each group having unique qualities.

“I enjoy having a mix of both Classical and Jazz ensembles, and I am continuously learning in all ensembles that I am a part of.

“The music teachers that I have had in my time at Girton are amazing musicians! They are always willing to help out and are also great role models for students. They work alongside students and frequently play in sections which is a good way for students to experience a professional music environment,” Amy said.

Tickets for the Twilight Jazz event on Friday 12th October are $15 and are available at trybooking.com/XRMH.
