Science That Shatters Matters!

7th July 2022

SCIENCE WEEK IS BACK!

Did you know that 2022 is the UN-declared International Year of Glass, celebrating what the UN describes as one of the most important, versatile and transformative materials in history?

As if that is not enough reason for celebration, scientists predict that glass will continue to have an enormous impact on our future, not only for its many applications but also for its integral role in sustainable development.

Picture this: watching the first Australian mission to the moon being watched through the lenses of telescopes and on the screens of our televisions and devices, using power collected from our solar panels and communicating with each other via fibre optic cables, while toasting the Australian Space Agency’s success with our recycled drinkware.

All possible because of glass!

This year, from 13 – 21 August, Girton will celebrate Science with the rest of the country.

Below, Head of Science Prue Beckwith shares her excitement about what will be on offer.

“The Science Department is so excited to be celebrating Science, and we can’t wait to show off the work of our students.

“All Senior School students will be involved in some way. There will be a Science Scavenge during an extended lunchtime, a Science Fair, guest speakers, and experts discussing careers in Science.

“Most of the action will take place in the Naunton Family Building. We will even have a ‘Bushmaster’ on display, which I know students will love exploring.

“This year’s National Science Week theme is glass. There will be plenty of connection with the theme and a broader look at different branches of Science.

“Girton parents and carers are warmly invited to attend the Science Fair on Thursday 18th August from 5 pm until 6.30 pm to see student work on display. Join your child in the Naunton Family building and ask them to describe what they have produced.

“From the depiction of food chains to evolution and Rube Goldberg machines, the students’ work will be on display for all to see,” Ms Beckwith said.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, do Science and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.

First held in 1997, National Science Week has become one of Australia’s largest festivals and Girton is pleased to be back in the classroom and in labs immersing in all things Science during this fun and informative week.
