What I Love about Teaching

  • Candid openness of students
  • The opportunity to make a difference and to encourage a passion for learning

What is the best thing about teaching at Girton?

  • The students
  • Supportive community

What do you like best about the subject you teach?
English is an essential lifetime skill applicable to every vocation, and indispensable to functioning in a global community.

My favourite classroom activity
One of my favourite activities is exposing students to a variety of presentations on acquiring the functions of figurative language. This is done through a rap which I found on youtube, it is amusing, informative and catchy. By the end of the session students are joining in with the music and they then apply this to their written and oral work. It equips them with the knowledge to then recognise how successful writers use these techniques to capture the audience and to create imagery.

What difference can good teaching make?
Describe the traits of a successful student in your subject or class.
A successful student in my classroom is one who believes in themselves and strives to achieve and improve their skills; one who is also excited about writing, reading and speaking.
My students benefit from my enthusiasm about the conventions of writing and my passion for English.
