Girton students and staff #EmbraceEquity on IWD 2023

Thursday 9th March

Wednesday 8th of March was International Women’s Day (IWD), and the Girton community demonstrated their commitment to this year’s theme, #EmbraceEquity. Senior School students and staff joined forces at lunchtime to strike the IWD 2023 pose and show the world their huge embrace.

According to Girton Principal, Dr Emma O’Rielly, embracing equity means recognising that every person deserves the same opportunities and respect, regardless of their gender. It means acknowledging the gender-based disparities that exist in our society and actively working to address them and creating a school culture that promotes equality, inclusivity, and diversity.

“As a female Principal at this school, I am committed to promoting gender equity at Girton,” said Dr O’Rielly. “But creating a truly equitable school and workplace requires a collective effort. It requires all of us, regardless of gender, to work together, to listen to each other, and to learn from each other. It requires us to challenge our own biases and assumptions and to hold ourselves accountable for our actions.

“So, today, on International Women’s Day, I pledge to do my part in embracing equity. I will continue to listen to and learn from my colleagues and students and I will continue to work to create a school and workplace culture that is inclusive and supportive of everyone,” said Dr O’Rielly.

“I invite all of you to join me in this important effort. Together, we can create a more equitable and just society.”
