“Second star to the right and straight on ’til morning” is quintessentially Peter Pan, but Girton Grammar School is set to cast the famous J.M Barrie play in a new menacing light.
From the opening scenes set in the bustling post-work hour of London in 1901 to the jungles of “Never Land” featuring industrial rudiments from another time, this year’s Senior School production promises to surprise and delight in equal measure.
Headmaster at Girton Grammar School, Mr Matthew Maruff, said that preparation for this year’s production is well underway and with nearly 150 students taking to the stage, it will be a busy rehearsal schedule.
“We have a cast ranging in age from ten to eighteen and a thirty-piece student orchestra supporting the production, so it’s an extremely busy time for our students and staff.
“The play contains a few surprises which I think the audience will enjoy and with LED screens and some incredible multimedia projections, the show will entertain on many levels.
“Our Senior School production has become extraordinary over the past few years with the bar being lifted higher each year and the standard of the production rivalling those of the best Australian schools.
“Our Drama and Music Departments are dedicated to producing a show which gives students a taste of what it is like to be involved in a professional theatre production.
“From ticket sales and publicity to costume design and theatre technicians, our students have an opportunity to be involved in a range of ways, and many go on to professional careers in theatre, music and film.
“We currently have eighteen recent graduates studying Music, Drama and Film subjects at University, five of whom are at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts and two are at National Academies.
“In Theatre Studies alone, 2018 is the fifth consecutive year that students have been selected for the prestigious Top Acts Season of Excellence, having achieved a perfect A+ score in VCE examinations.
“Although the play will be darker than the original, and some of the characters more sinister, the action and humour will still be there to make this a must-see show for all ages,” Mr Maruff said.
Tickets for Girton Grammar School’s production of Peter Pan are now on sale via The Capital (GoTix). Show dates are 14, 15 and 16 June 2018.
