Golden Sweep at School Music Festival

28th August 2017

Girton Grammar School music students in the Wind Symphony, Senior Concert Band, Girton Singers and Junior Performance Choir have been awarded Gold at one of the biggest School music events in Victoria.

The Victorian School Music Festival is a prestigious event held each year at a variety of venues around the State across a four week period, with schools from all over Victoria participating in a range of competitions.

Head of Girton Grammar Junior School Music, Mrs Laura Dusseljee, said that the event adjudicators described the Junior School Performance choir as “brilliant.”

“The judges were very impressed with our Choir and said they had great attention to detail.

“They also described the choir as well-disciplined, which is exactly what is required if a good choir is to become great,” Mrs Dusseljee said.

The Victorian School Music Festival provides the opportunity for students to perform in some of Victoria’s premier performing spaces and to work with leading music educators. Over the course of the event, students are provided with feedback and analysis to improve their performance and are awarded points according to a range of criteria related to performance, rehearsal, improvement and listening skills.

VCE Music teacher at Girton Grammar School, Mrs Jacqui Vine, said that the Wind Symphony and Senior Concert Band had learned an enormous amount through the competition.

“The Victorian School Music Festival is an ideal platform for music students to really listen to themselves and their peers making music.

“It gives students the chance to learn how things can be done differently and to analyse their own performance based on the recording of their music and the guidance of the Chief Adjudicator.

“Girton provides over 80 musical performance opportunities each year, both within the school and the broader community, and these opportunities give musicians something to work towards.

“We are extremely proud of both the Wind Symphony and our Concert Band, who performed so well under pressure and learned so much,” she said.

Girton Grammar School conducts approximately 600 vocal and instrumental music lessons each week and has one of the largest Regional music programs in Australia, with 15 musical groups in the Senior School and eleven in the Junior School.
