Rootsy Pop-Jazz Icon Comes to Girton

11th October 2017

One of Australia’s most talented singer songwriters, Monique diMattina, will perform in Bendigo this Friday 13 October at a special twilight jazz event, and all of Bendigo is invited to attend.

Monique diMattina is a Fulbright scholar, singer, songwriter and regular 3RRR Radio guest. She is best known for her exquisite piano stylings, catchy grooves and for brining popular music and jazz together.

Head of Music at Girton Grammar School, Mr Steve Vine, said that is an honour and a thrill to host such a talented musical icon in Bendigo.

“We are all extremely excited that Monique diMattina will visit Bendigo and we invite any jazz or pop lovers to come along and enjoy her incredible tones and playful lyrics.

“Monique is the type of artist who can write a song on request, on the spot, and she does so on 3RRR radio based on the whim of listeners. It is quite incredible.

“This will be such a magical night, with the Girton Jazz Band, The Girton Big Band and the Xin Trio from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) also providing a fantastic array of jazz inspired music,” Mr Vine said.

Monique diMattina cut her teeth in New York City, recording her first album live at the famous Greenwich Village 55 Bar and playing alongside the likes of Lou Reed, Bjork and the bands of Peter Gabriel, Norah Jones and Suzanne Vega.  Since returning to Australia in 2009, diMattina has released five albums to critical acclaim, and toured her two self-penned shows An Affair to Dismember and The Dao of Dylan with Rebecca Barnard.

diMattina was awarded the Fulbright scholarship in 2000 allowing her to go to New York in support of her Master’s degree. She talks fondly of waiting tables at the Village Vanguard, allowing her to hear everybody she had idolised for so many years.
