Ms Emily Erwin

Emily ERWINLife before Girton

I grew up on a farm and went to school in St Arnaud. After school I did a Gap Year in the Navy and afterwards completed a Bachelor of Arts (French and Spanish majors) and a Diploma of Education at Monash University. I also had a year off during my degree living in Spain and in France and working as an English language assistant.

What I Love about Teaching

I love sharing my passion for foreign language learning with students and watching them make improvements in their language abilities.

I enjoy teaching at Girton because the students are encouraged to be well rounded individuals and are supported in having a diverse range of co-curricular activities.

What do you like best about the subject/s you teach?

Learning a language enables students to become culturally aware and to communicate overseas with local populations. French is spoken by more than 200 million people over five continents. It is also the international language of cooking, fashion, theatre, dance and architecture. It can open up opportunities in a range of different fields of study.

My favourite classroom activity

I enjoy watching students create French role play scripts and act them out in groups. Students enjoy having the freedom to look up words and phrases and create their own humorous play. In this type of activity, students get to work in groups, develop their writing, speaking and listening skills all at the same time.

What difference can good teaching make?

Good teaching encourages students to take risks and feel confident in their own abilities. In my classes, I like to see students having a go at pronouncing difficult words, taking the initiative to look up new words, and feeling a sense of accomplishment in putting together different vocabulary items they have learned to create flowing sentences. Giving praise (in French) is an excellent way for me to foster confidence in students as well as trying to spread the passion I have for the subject.

Other Hats

I am involved in the Badminton co-curriculum at Girton. Outside of school I like to play netball over winter and I play for South Bendigo. I also play in the Bendigo Tennis competitions over summer.
