Life before Girton
Before commencing at Girton Grammar in 2008 I had previously taught at numerous primary schools in the Bendigo Region. I graduated from Latrobe University in Bendigo in 1998 and chose to stay within the area due to our family business. Raising my family and being a ‘stay at home mum’ was also a huge priority and was the most important thing for me to do at that stage.
What I Love about Teaching
My students of course!
I feel blessed that I can learn from my students every day. They teach me about the way they see the world and I learn so much from them.
What do you like about the students you teach?
Teaching students on the Autism Spectrum is very special. My students help me see and understand life from a different perspective. I learn to accept and appreciate their challenges and am often privileged to support them throughout their entire Junior School journey.
My Favourite Classroom Activity
HQ during lunchtimes is my favourite time of day. It can appear to be crazy but to see my students interact and play with each other in such a safe environment is incredibly rewarding.
What difference can good teaching make?
A successful student in HQ-
- Can engage in and enjoy conversation with others
- Can spend time socialising and enjoying the company of others
- Feels good about themselves
- Shows respect towards others
- ‘Has a Go’ at everything even if it is perhaps outside their comfort zone.
My co-curricular activity is ‘A Sporting Chance’. This program is the first of its kind and has been designed to support students on the Autism Spectrum in an inclusive sporting program. It is supported by Senior School student mentors and sees students from the wider Bendigo region participate in a variety of sports each week.
Our family loves to travel together and will jump at any opportunity for an adventure. We are a very active family with my children and husband involved in car- racing, karting, cycling (all disciplines), footy, wake boarding, triathlons and Ironman events. I’m # 1 support crew for all of them and I wouldn’t change a thing!!
